Chautauqua Opera Company and Conservatory Announces 2023 Season

Chautauqua Opera’s 2023 season will take us on a journey from London to Seville. Both of the season’s Stage Directors make their company debuts, with Chía Patiño directing La Tragédie de Carmen and Dennis Whitehead Darling mounting Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Kevin Burdette sings Sweeney Todd, returning to Chautauqua for the first time since his star turn as Ko-Ko in 2016’s The Mikado. Eve Gigliotti makes her Chautauqua Opera debut as Mrs. Lovett. Chautauqua Opera Company’s commitment to fostering the ongoing careers of its former Young Artists and students from Marlena Malas’ Opera Conservatory reaches a new high in 2023. Michael Colman (Apprentice 2021), Arnold Livingston Geiss (Apprentice 2018) and Amanda Lynn Bottoms (School of Music 2015, 2016, & 2018) return as Festival Artists and are featured in leading roles. Felix Aguilar Tomlinson (Apprentice 2022), Brian Jeffers (Studio Artist 2019) and Marquita Richardson (Conservatory 2022) return along with five other Apprentice Artists to be featured in both mainstage productions and a special Opera and Pops concert with the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra. Brian Ruggaber (Don Giovanni, 2017) returns to the company to design Sweeney Todd for the Norton Hall stage.

Opera Hispánica and the Americas Society, in collaboration with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, present the North American premiere of Ñomongeta (Conversation). Paraguayan tenor José Mongelós stars as a contemporary Guarani man who converses with Christopher Columbus about the effects of colonization on the Guarani people and the environment.

Ñomongeta, which combines contemporary and Indigenous music traditions with the lyricism of opera, is the first Guarani-language opera. It was written by Paraguayan composer Diego Sánchez Haase and librettist Modesto Escobar Aquino, with epilogue by Pedro Paredes Argüello.

El tenor paraguayo José Mongelós interpreta a un guaraní contemporáneo que conversa con Cristóbal Colón sobre los efectos de la colonización en el pueblo guaraní y el medio ambiente.

La ópera en guaraní Ñomongeta deleitará en escenarios de EEUU

La ópera en guaraní denominada Ñomongeta, escrita por el compositor y director orquestal Diego Sánchez Haase, se estrenará el 18 y el 24 de setiembre en el National Museum of the American Indian con sedes en Nueva York y Washington, Estados Unidos. La obra cuenta con libreto de Modesto Escobar Aquino y epílogo de Pedro Paredez Argüello. La misma es protagonizada por el tenor paraguayo José Mongelós y dirigida por la ecuatoriana Chía Patiño.

La ópera es presentada por la Ópera Hispánica de New York, el Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian y la Americas Society. La puesta presenta un diálogo imaginario entre un nativo y Cristóbal Colón, a 500 años de la llegada de los españoles a América, abordando temáticas siempre vigentes, como la problemática indígena y el medioambiente.

The opera in Guarani called Ñomongeta, written by the composer and orchestral director Diego Sánchez Haase, will premiere on September 18 and 24 at the National Museum of the American Indian with venues in New York and Washington, United States. The work has a libretto by Modesto Escobar Aquino and an epilogue by Pedro Paredez Argüello. It is starring the Paraguayan tenor José Mongelós and directed by the Ecuadorian Chía Patiño.

Notorious opera takes the AMFS stage

“Based on the legend of Don Juan, and directed by Chía Patiño, this comedy and morality tale “tells the story of an irresistible yet irredeemable playboy whose escapades lead him along a path to his own destruction,” according to the AMFS website. The opera was selected by Renée Fleming and Patrick Summers, as were the student artists of AOTVA.

Recently, Jane Glover sat down for an interview with the AMFS president and CEO, Alan Fletcher, for a recording of the program “High Notes,” in partnership with Aspen Public Radio, to talk about the opera and the famous story within it.”
